Mercury Switches and Thermostats

Old non-programmable thermostats, some automotive convenience lighting switches and anti-lock braking systems (ABS) in end-of-life vehicles contain mercury. If these items are disposed in regular landfills, mercury can enter into our soil and water and become a major health hazard. Just one gram of mercury is enough to contaminate an eight hectare lake to the point that the fish are inedible for one year.Mercury contamination of groundwater aquifers can render the primary source of drinking water for a rural community unsafe for many years.

For information on how to dispose these items, please contact the Product Care Association at (204) 477-0741 or 1-888-772-9772, or call  Miller Environmental Corporation at (204) 925-9600. Businesses must give their mercury switches and thermostats to a licensed hazardous waste disposal company for disposal.

MICROWAVE

Microwaves are a type of designated electronic waste. Manitoba has a well-established program for collection and disposal of electrical and electronic waste (e.g., home and vehicle audio/video systems, telephone sets and answering machines, desktop and portable computers and accessories, microwave oven etc.). This program is run by the Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA).

Please visit http://recyclemyelectronics.ca/mb/ for more information on how to recycle microwaves.

If the microwave is in good working condition, you may be able to donate it for reuse to a second hand thrift store such as Salvation Army,  Value Village and others.
